With more than a decade of general ophthalmology experience, Dr. Karlen performs many different types of specialized Ophthalmic surgical procedures. Dr. Karlen also provides clinical leadership through ongoing lectures for Kaiser Optometrists treating laser vision correction patients.
Dr. Karlen has done a considerable amount of charity work in Nigeria, the Turk Islands and Ghana. Dr. Karlen visits Ghana each year to teach surgical techniques to local Ophthalmologists and work in eye clinics. Dr. Karlen is board certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He also holds the distinction of serving as the past President of the Kaiser Permanente Ophthalmology Society and he was previously the Medical Director of TLC Laser Eye Centers in Silicon Valley.
